Why I’m Writing from the Edge of Now
Welcome—and thank you for being here.
I started The Edge of Now because I needed a space to write honestly, without filters or expectations. A space where wilderness, mortality, solitude, and meaning could exist in the same sentence—because they do in my life.
I’m Thom Barrett. I’ve spent a lifetime chasing wild places—mountains, rivers, snowfields, remote roads—and in recent years, I’ve been learning to sit still with something far wilder: Stage IV cancer.
This isn’t a newsletter about dying.
It’s about what becomes clear when you no longer have time to waste.
It’s about how the silence of a winter road trip can teach you more than a thousand conversations, how grief and joy can live side by side, and how writing becomes an act of remembering, reframing, and returning to what matters most.
